We found ourselves in our Alfa Tonale, lost in fog in North Yorkshire for this month’s Vogue on the Road tripette.
in an Italian Alfa Romeo is the Amalfi coastline: waves lapping the crumbling honeycomb bays, an Aperol Spritz on board a gently bobbing boat, and days spent in the Alfa, skirting the mountainous cliffs between cocktail hour and dinner.
In the absence of any such invitation, however, we found ourselves in our Alfa Tonale, lost in fog in North Yorkshire for this month’s Vogue on the Road tripette. Hey ho. You can’t win them all. Actually – whisper it softly – we were winners this month, for we found an absolute gem of a place that would give any five-star Italian palazzo a run for its lire. It’s so bloody perfect, and such a well-kept secret, that we really didn’t want to write about it, but you’ve got to share the love sometimes, so here we are, about to give up the keys to our new favourite British bolthole.
Before that: a few words about this sexy new Tonale, Alfa’s latest baby SUV. Boy, does it look hot. Ours was Alfa blue – a piercing, sporty electric blue that stakes its claim on the road with all the usual panache of Alfa Romeos; they manage to be both romantic and dynamic at the same time, an opera-singing footballer, if you like, which is a pretty convincing package when you think about it.
