from railways to hospitals, various unions seemingly pursuing work to rule even when not striking, disruptive protests blocking roads and threatening infrastructure, the state creaking and the economy struggling, might the Labour leader be tempted to borrow from Margaret Thatcher, and turn “Labour isn’t working” back on the Tories?
Whether he uses the actual slogan or not, this is essentially the Opposition’s case in the run-up to the next election: the suggestion that nothing in modern Britain works properly anymore. That also seems in part to be an element of the striking unions’ motivation: not simply to get the demands on the ballot, but to contribute to a growing political charge sheet levelled against the Government by frustrated voters.
How exactly would the Opposition fix the challenges facing public services, the private sector, the workforce and the communities in which we all live?
