While Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin could succeed in capturing the Russian capital if his fighters are unopposed it was unlikely that there would be no resistance – with fighting risking a further intensification of the conflict, Lord Dannatt added.
“It’s a significant threat to Putin’s leadership, particularly if elements of the Russian population or indeed the Russian population at large begins to question the war in Ukraine.” “If the Ukrainians’ preliminary moves over the last two or three weeks in their offensive, which have been probing Russian positions, have managed to find areas of weakness, this is a moment for the Ukrainians to really push and try and break through the Russia lines,” Lord Dannatt added.

It may well be that the Russian official military command was quite happy to stand back, apparently overwhelmed or not by Prigozhin, and give him the opportunity to take control of Rostov,” Lord Danntt said.
