The trail starts in the village of Barley and covers various landmarks associated with the story of the Pendle witches
Halloween is coming so what better time to look back at Lancashire's own brushes with the supposedly supernatural. Surely the most infamous of these is the Pendle Witch trials of 1612 when twelve women were accused of the murders of ten people by the use of witchcraft.
Such accusations may seem hard to imagine now but links to these women and their treatment can still be seen today. For this week's suggested walk, we're heading to Pendle Witch country and past a series of landmarks linked to the trials. It starts from the car park in the village of Barley and takes a figure of eight route, meaning you can either complete the full seven and half mile journey or choose just one the loops.The route was created by Visit Pendle and takes in various locations associated with the story of the witches. Among these are the village of Newchurch, where if you look up at the church’s tower, you will find the "Eye of God", painted on its side to ward off evil.
There is also Faugh's Quarry , Moss End, Bull Hole and Saddlers farms and Pendle Hill which is interminably linked with the witches. For those wanting a refreshments, both the Barley Mow and Pendle Inn are highly regarded spots for food and drink and welcoming to walkers. If you fancy a stop, the walk loops back to the starting point half way around so you enjoy some refreshments then or wait to complete the full circle. As always, be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the journey.
