The patients were moved after the discovery was made
Patients of a Paisley hospital are being transferred after a positive test for legionella was found in water for two wards. While NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has said no patients have been affected, steps are being taken to transfer the patients to other wards while remedial work is carried out. Both wards are situated in a standalone building away from the main RAH site and there is no impact on the wider hospital.
Legionella normally spreads via tiny droplets of water in the air, typically through sources such as air conditioner units, humidifiers and taps and showers that have not been used often. If inhaled, legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires' disease, a type of pneumonia. Symptoms include coughs, fevers and breathing problems. If untreated, it can be fatal, but normally responds well to a course of antibiotics.
