Gran lost £50,000 after learning of state pension age hike 'off Facebook'
A grandma says she lost £50,000, suffered ill health and was forced to undergo a gruelling medical assessment after the state pension age for women was raised.
Forced to continue working on the frontline as a carer throughout the Covid-19 pandemic instead of retiring when she had originally thought, Karen, from Blackpool, caught Covid in December 2020. She told LancsLive: “You would be putting cream on someone’s feet or putting socks on them, and think, how am I going to get up? Quite often, the person would say, are you okay? Let me help you, and I’d think, I’m supposed to be helping someone, and they’re helping me up.
“A woman from Blackpool Job Centre called and said she was my new job coach. Two doctors had said I wasn’t fit to work, and they’d given me a job coach - I was traumatised. I said to her, 'is this some sort of joke?'. I had told them on the form that I had taken medical retirement from my job, that I had long Covid, arthritis, anxiety and depression and I was 64 and they put me in the job club.
“If I didn’t pass the assessment then they would be sending me for jobs. The Occupational Health doctor had said I wasn’t fit for work, an independent doctor had said it - two doctors - but these health care professionals were doing this assessment; it must be to put you off claiming, as they don’t want you to claim.”
The state pension age hike has ‘ruined’ her life, she says, as she’s not been able to spend time with grandchildren, and struggled health wise and financially as a result. “I just buy what I need and that’s it. My children and grandchildren will get what was bought for them last year in the sales - I won’t be going Christmas shopping as it’s just heartbreaking when you look at the price of everything.
