‘The left haven’t gone away.’ Starmer’s internal critics are keeping quiet ahead of an election. But they fear his caution will backfire
Insiders note that, under Sir Keir, the bar is so low for the party whip to be withdrawn that there is little scope for MPs to make any kind of criticism of the party without finding themselves falling foul of the rules. “What we are getting from Labour is this ‘fiscal responsibility’ but it is a sort of austerity – or conservatism – dressed up as something else,” she told“A lot of people on the left are actually now starting to see that actually, we need to be ready for the inevitable that comes when come into government. These policies just aren’t going to cut it. There is going to be backlash and real public anger because they voted for change and the perception will be that nothing is changing.
“It’s just so hard to cut through when you’re not on the front bench,” one Labour left source lamented. But Starmer’s critics are concerned that, in its eagerness to castrate the left, the leadership is confining itself to policies that are too cautious. “My sense is that there’s a growing group of Conservatives who think it’s the election to lose given how much of a mess everything is – that makes things very unstable and it is a dangerous place for us.”
