Wood's Craft Bakery has been going for more than 40 years but was recently awarded the lowest possible rating for food hygiene
Never afraid of a challenge, I was tasked with trying the Blackburn butty shop which has recently been awarded the lowest possible food hygiene rating - somewhat contentiously, as the owners claim the inspection never happened.
Inspections cover everything from management of food safety - a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, cleanliness and condition of facilities including appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control and hygienic food handling. Few are unfortunate enough to receive a 0/5 rating but Wood's Craft Bakery did after inspectors from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council visited in January.
For just over £14 I bought a cheese salad sandwich, a ham salad sandwich, a samosa, a pork pie, a small blackcurrant pie and two cans of pop. Not just for me, I should add. It was a unique twist to see a butty shop selling samosas as they're one of my favourite Indian appetizers, although I wasn't blown away by it after tasting it when I got home.
The pastry on the pork pie was flaky and buttery and I especially enjoyed the blackcurrant pie which took me back to the days of my grandma's baking. The tart berries contrasted perfectly with the sweet pastry and I topped the pie with some double cream for extra indulgence.
