What makes a perfect motorway services? 🧐

Two Lancashire motorway service stations were recently ranked among the worst in the UK. Lancaster South and Charnock Richard South were given low marks by customers in a survey which looked at a number of criteria, including toilets, staff, value of the food and drink, electric vehicle charging, and the impact their visit had on their mood.

"Near-perfect" is quite the standard, so we visited the services to see whether the reality matched the hype. This is what we found: They were well signposted and easy to access, clean, bright and in full working order including a powerful flush, well stocked toilet roll, a sanitary bin that wasn't, well, unsanitary or overflowing, and the toilet bowl itself was pristine with no unsightly marks. The hot and cold water taps flowed freely and the hand dryers all worked, blasting out a powerful amount of hot air, drying hands in seconds.

Additional food and drink outlets included Greggs and Costa Coffee but, if fast food isn't your thing, then there was a slightly healthier option at Chopstix noodle bar. There's ample outdoor seating, a substantial, secure and safe car park, and a small arcade area. However, free parking is only available for a maximum two hours, and charges apply after that. In addition, these services are ideally located on the edge of an industrial estate, which sees large amounts of heavy goods vehicles passing through each day.
