Airports around the country have issues statements and updates as they tell travellers what to do amid the chaos

Airports around the country are warning passengers they will experience delays after the nation’s air traffic control system was hit by technical problems. In a series of statements the main airports all said that passengers should check with their airline and arrive for check in when they advise.

London Gatwick Airport said: “We are aware NATS is currently experiencing a technical issue. We are seeing delays, and cancellations are likely. We apologise for any inconvenience and ask you contact your airline for further information.” Manchester Airport said: ”We are aware of a nationwide air traffic control issue that is affecting flights in and out of airports across the country. This may cause disruption to some flights at Manchester Airport.

“Whilst aircraft will be loaded on time, some flights may be subject to a delay. This is out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s control, but we will keep you updated as things change. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.” “If you are flying with us today, please check our website for the latest information about your flight before setting off for the airport.”

Travel journalist Simon Calder said aircraft are coming down slowly, but that the “flow rate” - at which aircraft can land - has been significantly reduced.
