Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced her intention get the dog breed banned

The Home Secretary has announced her intention to get the dog breed, American XL Bully, banned in the UK. Suella Braverman has pushed for a ban on the breed, claiming the dogs are a “clear and lethal danger”, especially to children.

There are currently four banned breeds of dog in the UK: the pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino and fila Brasileiro. The dog is not recognised as a specific breed by the Kennel Club, meaning it could be hard to define and a ban could inadvertently outlaw a range of other dogs. His view is mirrored by the Dog Control Coalition, which argued that the Dangerous Dogs Act - which has focused on banning specific types - has coincided with "a troubling increase in dog bites and fatalities".

Owners of XL Bullies could face either a prison term or a fine if found guilty. A person guilty of something other than an aggravated offence is liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term of up to six months or a fine.
