A new season of Black Mirror debuts to a world which already feels like a Black Mirror episode
Back in 2015, the author Daniel M Lavery of very funny website The Toast pitched some ideas for upcoming episodes of the hottest and most subversive series on TV. One proposed episode ofin particular lodged in my brain then and has never left. One of Lavery’s suggestions was an episode called Raise High the Red String, with the six-word logline: ‘what if phones, but too much’.
But it’s also in a bit of a weird place. The fifth and most recent season was not its finest. There was a definite sense that some repetition was creeping in, and while every anthology show is a bit up and down, season five managed to be wildly inconsistent even with its three feature length episodes. We should not be overly dramatic –will always have its place as a daring, strange outlier in pop culture – but there’s some jeopardy here.
