💬 'My drinking seemed fine but it made me so sad' What I learned after quitting alcohol in 2022 ⬇️
What I learned after quitting alcohol: It changed my sleep, my happiness, and my relationship with food‘In the past, I used alcohol as an emotional override button. If I was at a party and I felt bored, or anxious, or unhappy, I’d try to drink the feelings away,’ says Daisy BuchananDaisy BuchananThe past six months have been the calmest and happiest that I have ever known. I finished writing a novel, I swam in the sea, I danced at weddings and birthday parties.
In my teens and twenties, I drank excessively and regularly. Sometimes I blacked out, sometimes I passed out. I did things I regretted with people I didn’t know very well. I felt anxious and exhausted, at least half the time. Then, I got lucky. I grew out of it.seemed to get a lot worse – but I’d have described my drinking as “normal’” It was social, it wasn’t daily.
But after lockdown, something started to shift. I was excited to socialise again, but anxious about it, too. Pre-pandemic, I usually restricted my drinking to the weekends. Now, I kept finding myself overdoing it at the pub on a Wednesday, trying to feel relaxed and connected. I felt nervous and awkward. I relied on alcohol to put me at ease.
Something strange started to happen to my hangovers. I didn’t struggle with headaches or nausea, but I felt very tired and very, sad. It was as though the hangover was happening inside my soul. Even though I could always remember the night before with perfect clarity, and I never behaved badly, I felt sticky with guilt and shame.
