“Any stiff bigots at Wimbledon, I imagined, would be more like spiders – as uncomfortable as they might make me, in that environment, they would probably be more scared of me than I was of them.”
In the end, it was way more chilled than I had expected. I thought it would feel formal – strict rules and stiff upper lips – but it felt, dare I say, quite casual. People were yelling jokes from their seats, and everyone was tipsy on Pimm’s and happy the sun was out. It was so thrilling to be a part of the game; in cheering on my faves, it felt like I contributed to the outcome of each match. I watched the incredible moment whenbeat the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, against the odds.
And I made lovely new friends – spending most of my time with a blue-eyed blonde with a blue-blooded accent who’s been to Wimbledon umpteen times, and who gave me a tour of the grounds. In her opinion, Wimbledon has always attracted lots of different types of people, because anyone can queue for a few hours and get in for a couple of tenners to watch the smaller games or sit on the hill in front of the big screens.
There was a little bit more variety in attendees than expected. And while inevitably you get some discomfortingly long looks every now and then from a haughty face, it’s not enough to dampen how much fun it is.
