As we approach the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline, the Dodgers are in somewhat of a familiar place, once again atop the NL West. The Cardinals on the other hand are in uncharted territory. Why the two storied franchises could be ideal trade partners ⤵️
Dylan Carlson has hit 13 home runs over the past two seasons after slugging 18 in 2021. The Cardinals would certainly be open to trading Hicks, who is set to be a free agent for the first time at the end of this season. Hicks, who pairs his 103 MPH fastball with a devastating wipeout slider, might be the most coveted reliever available this trade deadline. He wouldn’t come cheap, even though he’d be a rental, but all signs point to St. Louis trading him.
Given their current logjam in the outfield, it’s expected the Cardinals will part with either O’Neill or Carlson . Both have their pros and cons. O’Neill’s elite speed and plus defense in left field make him an obvious upgrade on the field. His whiff rate is high and he strikes out a ton, but the quality of his at-bats has improved each season and his power from the right side remains one of his top assets. O’Neill’s downside is his lengthy injury history.
and Frasso are intriguing Double-A arms who also must be added to a crowded 40-man roster this winter, and could be used to try to swing something as well.Of the above names, Grove and Frasso would probably be the most intriguing for St. Louis. The Cardinals aren’t just looking to add pitching, they’re looking to add arms that pack swing-and-miss. Grove’s 2023 numbers aren’t great, but his four-pitch arsenal and upper-90s fastball velocity are two tools the Cardinals would be eager about.
