West Lancs by-election: What happens next as Rosie Cooper resigns and constituency prepares for first new MP in 17 years
West Lancashire will soon have its first new MP since 2005 after Rosie Cooper formally resigned from the role.
A date for the byelection has not yet been set but can now only happen in the new year after a deadline for it to be held before Christmas was missed. Both Labour and the Conservatives - the only parties to have held the seat - have announced their candidates, as have the Liberal Democrats. The Labour-run council was forced to scrap a previously planned Local Plan and how much of the area's Green Belt land will be targeted by developers in a hot issue. Over in Skelmersdale, the constituency's most populous town, crime remains a hot talking point. Serious organised crime, with gun and knifes all too common, remain an issue while anti-social behaviour involving youths has spiked.
