The only other women to receive whole life prison orders are Joanna Dennehy, who murdered three men in 2013, Rose West, who with her husband Fred tortured and murdered 10 young women in the 70s and 80s, and Moors murderer Myra Hindley
After initial proceedings in the morning, the sentence is set to, who had maintained her innocence from the start, will be sentenced by Mr Justice Goss but is not expected to be in court for the hearing or appear by video link.
Mr Justice Goss has said the sentencing hearing will take place whether she is present or not, adding that he had “no power to force her to attend… therefore there is nothing I can do about it.” Cases which can fall into this category include: the murder of two or more people, the murder of a child involving abduction or sexual or sadistic motivation and the murder of a police officer.
As of 31 December 2022, there were 66 whole-life prisoners in the UK, including Levi Bellfield and former Metropolitan Police Service officer Wayne Couzens.Letby has been convicted of seven counts of murder and six of attempted murder. Prosecutors asked for 28 days to consider their position over whether to seek a retrial on six further outstanding counts.
