The tide has turned in favor of the Ukrainian troops, but it is not easing the red raw, visceral challenges for their citizens on the ground 🔵 AlexCrawfordSky for ipaperviews

in this war do not mean triumphs for ordinary people: the paucity of food, power and water is causing unity to splinter as desperate families fight for survival.

In some parts of the Donbas, there is just street after street, village after village which has simply been levelled. Our team took the road from Slovyansk in Donetsk and looped round north towards Izyum – the only way through at the time. It had been impassable until then because of fighting. Once on the road, we saw why. The route was littered with burned military and civilian vehicles. We swept past what were once homes, shops, schools – all reduced to dust and mounds of bricks.

All of the “liberated” towns and villages were husks of their former lives – emptied of most civilians who had fled. Those still there were the very hardened, the very old or people who could not leave or didn’t want to. The residents we spoke to were reeling from the swiftness of the change of hands, paranoid, suspicious of everything and everyone, and markedly unsure about how long any “control” is going to hold for.

Olga, who has four children, told us how fear had turned to aggression. “I thought the war would bring us all together,” she said, “but it’s dog eat dog now.” The needs of the very young are being pitted against the very old in this second battle of Lyman: the battle over food. This is the next fight they have to win if they’re to make it through this war.
