Wright encourages people to put all their cards on the table by being upfront about how they feel, what they want, and what they need. “Keeping how you feel, what you want, and what you need to yourself is often harmful to relationships and growing long-term,” she says. “If you know you’re non-monogamous and are looking for someone to have a casual, long-term relationship with, you’re going to want different things than someone who is looking for a primary partner to live with.
Armed with the awareness that many people are currently longing for closeness, there’s a case for being clingy : the person at the other end of your phone might love to hear more from you. Perhaps they too are playing the unsatisfying game of who can care less. As Baratz puts it: “Clinging in this sense of the word is actually a big part of what makes connections turn into relationships.” As with all relationship-building activities, the only way to know is to try.
