'Students like me are all potential agents in the Kremlin's eyes.'
Petar Tanev, who was born in Bulgaria but lived in Moscow for 13 years, told Metro.co.uk about attempts to recruit him to spread ‘malicious’ anti-EU and Nato propaganda.
Months before graduating in 2022, Petar was invited by a fellow Bulgarian on a trip to annexed Crimea as part of a project to organise events aimed at influencing the Balkan peninsula. ‘The person who invited us was a great lobbyist. He told me I have a bright future representing Bulgaria in Russia, or the other way around. He already knew I held a dual citizenship.‘This is a real example of how they get people interested. He asked me to gather other Bulgarians, but also Serbians and Macedonians, who live and study in Russia to also invite them to Crimea.‘This man started calling me every day, but I simply ignored him.
