The three-time Oscar winner is the central focus of the season-three opening scenes, when a young Loretta is seen in Broadway's Goosebury Theater in 1962 watching a Rodgers and Hammerstein rendition agog. She and her little pigtails skip down the aisle to get up close to the stage and she's struck, "smitten", with showbiz – so Charles tells us in a voiceover.
As the rehearsals get under way with the somewhat obnoxious Ben, we then see her and Oliver grow close, as her confidence wobbles and he props her up. "The show may be over, but doesn’t that mean we’re not obliged to live by your show rule anymore?" Loretta asks Oliver with a coy smile. "The one that keeps things professional and platonic?" He certainly looks taken by the idea.And that's when Ben rises like Lazarus behind them, explaining his stage exit from this life hadn't been so final after all.
