The concept that everyone must fit into a singular costume size and style is fundamentally flawed
Trina Nicole: “Not only slim, physically fit women are suited to wear these costumes” holds a special significance in my heart as it embodies the celebration of Caribbean culture, diversity, and unity. From the tender age of two, I’ve been exposed to the sound systems, dance moves, and vibrant costumes that the carnival offers.
Society has persistently imposed a narrow definition of beauty, and over time, I’ve observed similar ideals emerging among carnival bands and their designers. A preference that seems to lean towards favouring slender, well-toned physiques. Rarely have I witnessed plus-size women being adequately represented in costumes.
So when Laura, founder of London-based mas band Gempio Mas, who’s a plus-size creator herself, got in touch, I was excited. Mas bands design the costumes and organise performances for participants during the carnival. They tend to have a specific theme or concept and each year compete for prizes and recognition based on their creativity, presentation, and execution during the Carnival procession.
. Carnival stands as a moment to defy the conventional belief that only slim, physically fit women are suited to wear these costumes and Gempio Mas was a beautiful reminder of why I fell in love with Carnival in the first place.
