Leo Varadkar is making a comeback, vowing to lead the country 'with humility and resolve' as he promised 'hope and housing, economic opportunities and a fair start for all'

Taoiseach Micheál Martin formally resigned on Saturday morning, tendering his resignation to Ireland’s president Michael D Higgins.

We take a look at how and why this is happening more than two years after the last general election in Ireland.Ireland’s 2020 general election resulted in three parties – Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin – each winning a substantial chunk of seats in the 160-seat Dáil .secured the most first preference votes but won 37 seats.

The Programme of Government agreed by the parties stipulated that Mr Martin would serve as Taoiseach from June 2020 until mid-way through the term, in December 2022, when Mr Varadkar would succeed him. There is some expectation Mr Martin may become Ireland’s foreign affairs minister, a position he held more than a decade ago.could then potentially replace his party leader Mr Varadkar at the helm of the department of enterprise.

The 62-year-old worked as a teacher before entering politics and is married with three surviving children. “I’m looking forward to the second phase of this Government. We’ve done a lot in the first phase but we still have a lot to do.”
