The Scottish trio stand out in a strong list of albums proving the strength of the British-Irish music scene
? Since the British music event launched in 1992, it has had a mixed reputation: for some, its purpose is providing prestigious recognition of artistic achievement; for others, the prize is elitist and pointless. Whatever your view, it continues to retain relevance three decades on: sales for winning albums tend to shoot up dramatically. For those of us not in the industry, what it’s most useful for is identifying a selection of music to get stuck into if you missed it the first time round.
Tonight is the ceremony, with an impressive and competitive list of 12 British and Irish albums – so who should take it home, and what should you be listening to?is, for me, the standout record. The Scottish trio formed in 2008 and already won the prize in 2014; if they did win this year, they would be the second artist ever to win more than once .
That said, this year’s list is a particularly strong one; its variety is testament to a good period for the British-Irish music industry. Though it may seem like labels are increasingly churning out background playlist fodder, there is also plenty of space for the album as we collectively tire of algorithm suggestions. The UK is a consistent source of pioneering artists across genres, notably those rooted in black communities like hip-hop and jazz – and this list proves it.
