Preston North End started off their 2022/23 Championship season with a point on the road as they drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic.

The home side had the first chance of the game, four minutes in, with former North End loaneemeeting Latics skipper Tendayi Darikwa's low cross from the right but firing wide of the near post.

Headers from Emil Riis after 31 minutes and Liam Lindsay two minutes later were the only flashes at goal for North End, though neither troubled Ben Amos in the Wigan goal. There was even time before the interval for another PNE chance, as Andrew Hughes' header from a corner was deflected off one of his own players and onto the crossbar before going behind.

After 64 minutes Keane turned on the ball at the edge of the PNE box but his shot was straight at Woodman and lacking the power required to beat then new no.1. Then came a turning point in the game, as Ched Evans as sent off. The Welshman, who had been on the pitch for eight minutes at this point, sliding in late defender Curtis Tilt as he went to grown. Evans collided with his chest and it was a simple decision for referee Bobby Madley.
