Wilko has today confirmed store closures and redundancies will take place in the future but has denied union claims that they could begin as soon as next week.

Administrators from PwC then sought offers from potentially interested firms in an effort to save jobs and stores. However, the union said on Wednesday it was told in a meeting that “there is no longer any prospect that the majority of the business will be saved”.Andy Prendergast, GMB national secretary, said: “GMB union will continue to support members through this process and will fight to ensure members are consulted as per the law and that you receive every penny you are entitled to.

Administrators for the retailer have denied the majority of its stores will be closed next week. A statement from Jane Steer, Zelf Hussain and Edward Williams of PwC, joint administrators of Wilkinson Hardware Stores Ltd, Wilko Ltd and Wilko.com Ltd, said while redundancies and closures were likely in the future, there are “no plans to close any stores next week”.
