It has been 75 years since the first of the Windrush generation arrived in the UK – but the celebrations are marred by the fact people are still being affected by the Windrush scandal AasmaDay explains the Windrush generation and scandal ⬇️
is the term given to describe the people who arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1973 to fill UK labour shortages after the Second World War.– the ship which brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean people to the UK in 1948.became a symbol of a wider mass-migration movement and its 492 passengers, and others who subsequently arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971, became known as the Windrush generation.
It came to light that hundreds of Commonwealth citizens, many of whom were from the Windrush generation, had been wrongly detained, deported and denied legal rights. Those affected by the scandal were unable to prove they were in the country legally and were prevented from accessing healthcare, work and housing and many of them were threatened with deportation.
Suddenly, thousands of people who had been living in the UK for decades, were forced to try and prove they were in the UK legally. Landing cards had been destroyed, which would have proved the arrival of each immigrant, it was revealed in 2018. However, the scheme itself has been criticised for processing delays, low offers, and unfair rejections reversed on appeal.
