Nadine Benjamin and Dame Sarah Connolly’s soaring, pure-toned voices drive a Michael Tippett masterpiece that could not be more relevant today
Principal Conductor Edward Gardner with Dame Sarah Connolly, Nadine Benjamin and the LPO at the Southbank Centre in London is a musical child of our own time, too. Inspired by the horrors of Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany in November 1938, it was the work that made Tippett’s name at its premiere six years later, and quite rightly so. He convincingly made the specific into the universal; as he writes in his own libretto, “one race stood for all”.
The experience of collective music-making – and the audience is part of it, since listening is active, not passive – can provide us with that psychological process and lets us share the experience with friends and strangers alike. This is why it is so damaging when that has taken decades and centuries to build up to such levels of expression. People have always needed music and they always will.that brought out the very best in the work, both mourning and cherishing the human condition.
Among the soloists were soaring, pure-toned performances from the soprano Nadine Benjamin and the mezzo Dame Sarah Connolly; the baritone Roderick Williams was an ever-persuasive narrator; and Kenneth Tarver carried the tenor solos well enough. The London Philharmonic Chorus made light work of Tippett’s tricky vocal writing and the orchestra – which premiered this work 78 years ago and is currently celebrating its 90th birthday – played its heart out. was a perfect choice.
