The biggest takeaway from the first quarter of the 2023 season is that the title is Las Vegas’ to lose. But there are plenty of other pleasant surprises around the league, reflected in sabreenajm's rankings.
Collier is Minnesota’s unquestioned leader this season after the retirement of Sylvia Fowles, and she’s stepped into the No. 1 scoring option role fairly seamlessly. Against Los Angeles, she showed off her full bag of tricks. She was too quick for the traditional bigs, namely the Ogwumike sisters, able to blow by them on drives or face up and get to her spots. When Collier was matched up with a smaller defender, she used her strength to score over them.
Now that Minnesota is playing without a traditional point guard in the starting lineup, Collier is taking on some facilitating duties. Her role mostly consisted of bringing the ball up against the Sparks, not so much running the offense, but her ability to take the ball coast-to-coast is a useful feature for a player her size and one that L.A. was unable to contend with.
