Gemma Sparkes, 27, said she thought she had no future until Liverpool changed her life
The life of a woman who thought she had no future completely changed after visiting the Albert Dock.
Recalling the moment she picked up her results slip, she said: “I remember walking into the hall to get my envelope and no teacher spoke to me. When Gemma finally got her offer to study Tourism Management at Liverpool Hope University, she “sat and cried” with relief. She wasted no time getting involved in university life and was elected as Black and Ethnic Minority Officer at the students union.
She was rejected from a retail job due to being “too quiet” and realised she needed to improve her public speaking. Gemma enlisted on the Rise training programme as part of Agent Academy, an organisation based in the Baltic which offers mentoring and internships for people entering marketing and other creative industries.
In her role, she is responsible for the digital communications of Liverpool Convention Bureau, as well as the promotion of Liverpool as a tourist destination through the curation of visitor guides. As someone who travelled to Liverpool and made the city her home, Gemma feels she is the perfect person to convince others to do the same.
