Woman, 20, who died whilst detained on psychiatric unit 250 miles from home 'should have been given higher priority' inquest told
A young woman who died whilst detained on a psychiatric unit 250 miles from home should have been given 'higher priority' during the search for a bed at a unit closer to her family, her doctor has told an inquest into her death.
Giving evidence on the third day of the month-long inquest into her death at South Manchester Coroner's Court, Lauren's psychiatrist at the Priory Cheadle, Dr Hari Kumar Sholinghur, said that in September 2021, those looking after her deemed she was ready to 'step down' to a different kind of unit, closer to home.
Asked if he was becoming 'displeased' at the situation, he said: "I do feel it should have been given a higher priority. I don't know how I expressed it but I did feel that." He said at all meetings about Lauren he raised 'what the value was of finding the right bed.' There was a second, in January 2022, where the coroner said it was believed there may have been 'colluding behaviours' regarding the 'physical assault of another peer.'
