It will be the town's fourth branch of McDonald's
Building work has started on a two-storey McDonald's on the outskirts of Mansfield as the town prepares to host its fourth branch of the fast food giant. The Government overturned Mansfield District Council's original decision to refuse planning permission for the restaurant, which is being built in the car park of an ASDA supermarket.
But the Government's decision means the new McDonald's is going ahead, preparing to join four Subways, two Burger Kings and two KFCs in Mansfield. A large area of the ASDA car park off Old Mill Lane in the Forest Town area has now been closed off as building work begins.
In its original refusal of the planning application in 2019, Mansfield District Council said: "Public Health England confirm that the health of people in Mansfield is generally worse than the England average... The proposed development, located within a predominantly residential district and in close proximity to schools, would provide greater access and opportunity for people, particularly children, to eat unhealthily.
The Government's Planning Inspectorate, which ruled in favour of McDonald's when the company appealed against Mansfield District Council's original refusal, also said public health concerns were not a valid reason to refuse the application.
