Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky held a “long and meaningful” call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday. During the hour-long conversation, Xi warned that “there is no winner in a nuclear war”, according to reports in Chinese state media

China’s president spoke with Ukraine for the first time since the outbreak of war, following a visit to see Vladimir PutinLate Editor and Senior Reporterhas said he held a “long and meaningful” call with Chinese President Xi Jinping., which China has not joined the West in condemning.

President Xi said: “There is no winner in a nuclear war. All parties concerned should remain calm and restrained in dealing with the nuclear issue and truly look at the future and destiny of themselves and humanity as a whole and work together to manage the crisis.” President Zelensky said: “I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations.”Exactly how significant the meeting will be is yet to be seen. China has said it will continue to provide “humanitarian assistance” to Ukraine and announced it will send a “special representative” to Ukraine in support of a “political settlement”.

In a readout of Wednesday’s call, President Xi was quoted as saying that China is “a responsible majority country” that would “neither watch the fire from the other side, nor add fuel to the fire, let alone take advantage of the crisis to profit”.President Zelensky has previously said that there “can be no peace at the expense of territorial compromises.”
