Andy Burnham wants food delivery companies to sign up to new standards requiring their workers to wear reflective gear and lights on their bikes. The Greater Manchester mayor says he will be convening a meeting with the likes of Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat to request the move.
"And as a driver, I'm concerned - the amount of bikes that don't have lights on, there's no reflective gear on them. So as a driver, I'm frightened of hitting them. "I had a close escape the other day when I come out of my daughter's flat and come onto the pavement, and the road, it's Mirabel Street and it's actually shut off the middle, so there's no vehicular access, but there's a footpath and an electric bike comes flying there. How it missed me I don't know.
He said: "This is probably the first time I've said this, but it's been on my mind for a while. I'm going to get these companies together.
