Coronations past and present had a few unusual rituals.
A monarch offers an ingot or wedge of gold totalling one pound in weight – worth about £18,500 for a troy pound – at the High Altar before communion. The Lord Great Chamberlain delivers the ingot to the monarch, and the Archbishop of Canterbury carries it to the altar in an embroidered velvet bag on a tray .
Edward I commissioned the Coronation Chair to house the stone. Since the 13th century, all English and later British sovereigns have been crowned with the stones beneath them, but it only leaves Scotland for coronations. According to the House of Commons Library, foreign monarchs attending the coronation of a British King or Queen is a rare occurrence. However, the Queen of Tonga and a number of sultans attended the 1953 ceremony with crown princes or princesses.
Made for George IV's 1821 coronation, the sword has roses, thistles, and shamrocks adorning it, with a hilt encrusted with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.Blood princes and peersThe Archbishop of Canterbury pays homage to the monarch, then the senior peers, with the Prince of Wales and other blood princes taking precedence.
