The British actor was the golden girl of the National Youth Theatre when she was invited to join the RSC aged 20.
It was stepping into DCI Jane Tennison’s bland suits that made Helen Mirren a household name in 1991, but her talent had marked her out for big things decades before. The golden girl of the National Youth Theatre, Mirren’s dazzling performance as the lead inat the Old Vic saw her invited to join the RSC aged 20. She’s one of only a few performers to have achieved acting’s “Triple Crown”, a US term that refers to stars who have won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony, the highest accolades in film, TV and theatre respectively.
