The Australian airline’s boss has written to senior staff asking them to volunteer for the shifts as the aviation industry is gripped by a recruitment crisis

Top executives with the carrier were contacted about volunteering at Melbourne and Sydney airports to carry out tasks such as loading luggage and driving vehicles. More than 1,600 luggage handlers were sacked by Qantas during the pandemic, with more than 8 per cent of flights cancelled in June, making it Australia’s least reliable airline.

“As we have done in the past during busy periods, around 200 head office staff have helped at airports during peak travel periods since Easter.
