Khan’s film – his first designed primarily as a cinematic experience, rather than a film of a stage show – is a collaboration with Asif Kapadia, known for his narrative-driven documentaries about Amy Winehouse, Diego ­Maradona and Ayrton Senna.

He clearly sees dance as uniquely placed to explore the physical experience of trauma. “The experiential is in the body, not just in the mind. And so I spend a lot of time watching bodies and how situations affect bodies.”, is a story of an exploited human being whose trauma can only be expressed through the body. “If your environment is wild, and it makes you feel wild, you will become wild,” Khan says. “The character of Creature is human.

But while he was excited about the possibilities afforded by film, live performance is sacred to him. “It’s the last human ritual we’ve got left. When you buy a ticket, you sign a contract. I’m gonna give you two hours of my entire focus to be in the present. I don’t know the person to the left of me. I don’t know the person to the right. But a thousand of us will be sitting there collectively, giving you two hours of our time. That’s the last human ritual.
