'It doesn't do justice' - Anglers' club suing company which was fined £160,000 for river pollution 🎣
A Lincolnshire angling club has filed a claim against a company which caused the deaths of at least 135,000 River Witham fish in a pollution incident in March 2018.
The Environment Agency described the incident as"one of the largest environmental disasters ever recorded in Lincolnshire."On 12 June 2023, the company pleaded guilty to polluting a 46km stretch of the River Witham with approximately 3 million litres of ammonia. This is the second time anglers have taken legal action against Omex Agriculture Ltd for fertiliser pollution.
Cameron Hogg, Solicitor of Fish Legal said: “Omex Agriculture Ltd has a track record of polluting the River Witham. And while we welcome the Environment Agency taking enforcement action against the company on this occasion, the £160,000 fine handed down by the Court doesn’t really do justice to the sheer scale of this environmental crime.”
