He was criticised for failing to keep out Jarrod Bowen’s leveller at West Ham and the next goal he conceded – to Carlos Alcaraz – was a mess entirely of his own making. The pass straight to the Saint was bad enough, but Jamie Carragher felt Ramsdale then wasted the opportunity for immediate atonement when his right hand failed to divert the ball away from his net.
In Ramsdale’s case, the pass was never on. But his judgement was clouded and caused him to see something that wasn’t there. Nervousness, probably. And perhaps an over-eagerness to display the illusion of nervelessness. There is a level of confidence that can be faked, in goalkeeping as in life, but there comes a level of faux-cockiness that always betrays the bluffer. It is something the best English keepers in recent years have had to wrestle with. Joe Hart was so bold as to attempt to intimidate Andrea Pirlo, but not confident enough to ever really get over being sat down and Panenka’d by the Italy star.
