Yet 3D’s noisy renaissance has passed. The format promised to make cinema “more immersive”, but instead made it less so. It wasn’t just the headaches, the dimming of the screen and those fundamentally uncomfortable glasses. If you’ll forgive me for slipping into the intellectualised language of film academia here, it made things look weird. You never hear anyone ask, “Is it showing in 3D?” any more.
– Cameron is a remarkable and singular film-maker, whose sweeping sentimentality and innate grasp of the grammar of action cinema can turn apparently third-hand stories into viscerally exciting and deeply moving movies. Think of the moments: “Punch it, Bishop!” in his crackling 1986 actioner; or the “Nearer My God to Thee” montage in that waterlogged 1997 epic.
