The smoke was found to be coming from a disposable vaping unit
A potentially disastrous bin lorry fire has been caught on camera during a collection in Rushden. North Northamptonshire Council are using the video to demonstrate the dangers of throwing batteries away.
The footage was taken during a collection in Slaters Close, Rushden, on Monday morning, September 26. In it, smoke and flames can be seen burning inside the lorry itself, with the potential to ignite the whole waste heap. The waste collection crew quickly removed the bin full of waste to prevent a serious incident, according to NNC. The video has since been posted to the council's YouTube.NNC said in a release that the smoke was found to be coming from a disposable vaping unit. Small electrical items like these contain nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries.
The council is now reminding residents that rechargeable batteries and similar items can ignite very easily in a waste collection vehicle. They should never be placed in either your refuse or recycling bin. This is not the first incident involving a bin fire in Rushden. A few weeks ago another waste vehicle caught fire in Westfield Avenue. The whole load had to be tipped in the street and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service called out to make it safe.At NorthantsLive we're more than just news.
