Russell Macmillan has described the care system as 'broken'.
The blind son of an elderly war veteran has been forced to provide personal care for his dad due to a lack of home carers working at his semi-sheltered accommodation complex.
Speaking to Glasgow Live, Russell said: "My dad is currently living in semi-sheltered accommodation, which is for people transitioning from living independently, who aren't yet ready to move to a care home. "My dad is now spending his day worrying about whether he's going to be seen or not. There was an incident previously where he had taken the wrong medication, so now it needs to be supervised. He panics about that every day.
Russell added: "All the carers are fantastic, they're the angels of mercy, but they are being paid pennies. They are carrying out shifts in all weather, dealing with elderly people with continence issues and dementia, which can be extremely challenging. Russell has now written to Nicola Sturgeon urging the First Minister to "intervene urgently and sort the homecare crisis that is leaving our frail neighbours terrified."
"As founder of East Renfrewshire Good Causes ERGC, a charity set up in 2007 to provide 'goods and services' to deserving neighbours as identified by dedicated trained frontline workers from state and 3rd sector groups, I was shocked to receive a request that we part funded a private care package for an elderly 90-year-old probable stroke victim, because the state could not provide their statutory duty and provide a care package.
