The 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers believes Boris Johnson can be replaced as party leader and removed as Prime Minister by early September,Mr Johnson is not planning to leave Downing Street until a new Tory leader is elected despite growing calls from senior party figures including ex-PM Sir John Major to quit immediately to let a caretaker prime minister take over.
The committee will then recommend that members should have six weeks to choose Mr Johnson’s successor from the final two candidates, although the final decision is taken by the Tory Party board. A Cabinet minister said the fact that “serious people” like Greg Clark and Robert Buckland – who have never been allies of Mr Johnson – had agreed to serve in the Government was a sign that stability had returned after several hours of uncertainty on Thursday morning.
