Naturalist turned presenter Chris Packham discusses his regret over not doing more to help the planet as new BBC show looks back over the Earth's history and disasters

When Chris Packham is on our screens in Springwatch, he’s usually surrounded by lush meadows, lakes and fields of wildflowers. But in new show Earth, he’s visiting volcanoes and icy landscapes as he takes us back over four billion years to look at huge events that shaped our planet.

There were some magical moments, like when you pick up a meteorite that’s come from another part of the universe, there is an immediate sense of euphoria. We had some very beautiful fossils.” “I’d just arrived, met the crew and the director for the first time and within five minutes, an Andean condor pooed on me,” he laughs. “I turned to the crew and was absolutely elated to be pooed upon by such a magnificent animal. I was revelling in that joy and then I suddenly realised, ‘Oh blimey, they probably think they’ve got a nutter that’s just turned up.’”

“We were conscious that we were minimising our own carbon footprint during the making of it,” says Chris. “You can see the same locations featured in the programme, so we were constantly trying to choose locations that looked different, and told different parts of the story, so we were travelling as lightly as possible.”

“Since 1970, we’ve lost 69% of the world’s wildlife, and I remember 1970 like it was yesterday. It was just before T.Rex and it was Bobby Moore allegedly stealing a bracelet at the Mexico World Cup. So I hope other people feel as guilty as I do because we have failed. And now we need to fix it.”
