DCI Brian Geddes, who brought murderer William MacDowell to justice, says he hopes they will one day find their resting place

It was one of Scotland's longest unsolved cases - the murder of Renee MacRae and her three-year-old son Andrew, who disappeared near Inverness in November 1976.

Speaking to the Record ahead of a new documentary which follows MacDowell's 2022 murder trial, DCI Geddes, 48, said: "I am delighted we were able to give the family justice and get a conviction, but it still rankles that MacDowell died before we could speak to him face to face about the location of the bodies even though deep down I knew he wasn't ever going to engage.

The detective, who led Operation Abermule - a review of the cold case which began in 2018 - added: "It is my personal belief that only MacDowell knows where they are but that is not going to stop us."We didn't find anything but that doesn't mean there aren't more locations that will be searched if we get new info. One of the team is still reviewing where we are at with the bodies and locations.

MacDowell, a married father of two, carried out the horrific crimes fearing his affair was about to be exposed and his marriage and career put at risk. The programme includes several interviews with Renee's sister Morag Govans, 84, who speaks about the massive hole the loss of Renee and her nephew have left in her life.
