Police had to smash a window to rescue a dog who had been left inside a locked campervan for three days.Police were called this afternoon over concerns for the welfare of the golden retriever. Callers said there weren’t any windows open and nobody had been seen in or around the van.

The poor dog was seen sitting in the driver’s seat, looking dejected and uncomfortable, when police arrived.It’s not known exactly how long the dog had been left in the campervan alone, but it had been parked in the area for three days before police were called. The dog is being cared for at one of the force’s rescue centres, while officers try to trace the owner.

Chief Inspector Chris Boyd said: ‘It is just not acceptable to allow a dog to be in a vehicle on their own for even a couple of hours, let alone three days. ‘When we found him, there were no open windows and, with it being quite warm today, this could have ended up a disaster.Poor pooch! More:
