It followed the heavy snowfall
East Midlands Airport was forced to close its runway on Friday, March 10, due to "heavy snowfall" overnight. It comes after the airport was forced to temporarily hold all flights in order to clear snow off their runway on Thursday morning, March 9.
The airport, located near Castle Donington, stated health and safety will always be a "top priority." On Thursday, EMA explained four departing flights were delayed by snow falling onto the runway. One flight arriving from Poland also had to be diverted as a result. A spokesperson for EMA tweeted at 5.13am on Friday: "Following a period of heavy snowfall, we have temporarily closed our runway. Health and safety will always be our top priority and operations will resume at the earliest opportunity."Passengers are advised to contact their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.
The issue has since been cleared and EMA services have resumed as usual. However, the airport explained there may be some delays later due to the earlier closure.
