A judge described Jacob Hutchingson's actions as a 'cowardly assault' and a 'shocking episode of street violence'

A thug told a judge "thank you very much" for jailing him after he battered a disabled man in a random and unprovoked attack outside a pub.

The 37-year-old stated he did not know the woman, but without warning was punched twice to the face. His assailant walked away before returning and hitting him again, the ECHO reports. Mr Hillier received treatment in hospital after suffering a broken nose, which will require an operation, as well as cuts and bruises to the face. Mrs Hillier meanwhile suffered "minor bruising and swelling".

In a statement which was read out to the court, Mr Hillier - who has learning difficulties and lives in supported accommodation - said he was "left feeling very down" and "staying in all the time" in the aftermath of the assault. He added: "I still don't know why I was targeted that night."I'm confused why he assaulted me so badly. I feel this has really knocked my confidence.

Brendan Carville, defending, told the court his client hails from the Bradford area and had been visiting his aunt in Southport at the time. Qualified gasfitter Hutchingson, who gave an address of Pilling Close in Southport to the court, was said to have served four years in the Royal Yorkshire Regiment and volunteered to help elderly members of his community during the Covid-19 pandemic by completing gardening and shopping duties.
