What the suspension of Rubiales means for Spain, Hermoso, the other players, the coaches, his successor and other national teams

Hermoso has since strongly denied that she gave any consent, and quickly gained support from many within women’s football, both in Spain and around the world. Meanwhile, many other images also emerged of Rubialeswith other members of Spain’s team during the celebrations that followed the final. That is easier said than done, however — only the federation’s general assembly can remove the president. RFEF statutes include the possibility of disciplinary action for “behaviours related to sexual violence”, however Friday’s standing ovation from many of the delegates present for Rubiales’ speech suggests they are not about to move against him.
Complicating the matter is that the current general sports law passed through parliament just last December, and all its details have not yet been officially put into action. Rocha was one of those applauding Rubiales’ speech on Friday, and there has been no suggestion that his promotion to acting leader of the organisation will lead to any changes in policy.
Hermoso has said she did not make the statement the federation released on her behalf soon after the final, in which she is quoted as saying the kiss with Rubiales had been consensual and was of no real consequence. She has since said that federation staff have attempted repeatedly to contact her and her family to try to persuade her to offer support for Rubiales.
